
James Garlick
James has been involved in music from a very young age as his Dad, Philip Garlick is Head of Brass for Kirklees Music School. He started playing cornet at the age of seven. After four years he decided that he was better suited to the trombone. By the age of fourteen he was Solo Trombone with the Skelmanthorpe band. After two years he was invited by the Carlton Maine Frickley Colliery Band to join on Solo Trombone; during that time the band won the Grand Shield and the Yorkshire Area.
At the age of seventeen he was travelling to and from Wales spending a short time at Tredegar Band. By the age of seventeen he worked his way through the ranks and was asked to join the Brighouse & Rastrick Band on Solo Trombone.
James then gained a place at the Royal Northen College of Music. Whilst there James played with many bands including the then, Williams Fairey Band, Black Dyke and Grimethorpe Band.
At the age of nineteen he was offered his first professional OB with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra. Since then James has played for the Halle Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and the Opera North Orchestra. Alongside his playing career he is also a trombone tutor at the Junior Royal Northern College of Music and an external examiner for the Royal Northern College of Music. Working with these Orchestras has made it possible for james to tour Japan, Korea, South America, Germany, Norway and Prague.
James is currently training to become a Primary School teacher. He has been conducting the Dobcross Youth Band since June 2009 and is enjoying watching the band's progress and is looking forward to a long successful future with the band.
